First 50 degree day of the year!

 
50F degrees in Minneapolis today, can sailing be far behind? I mean, we all have sailed in 50 degree weather! OK, so the ice and the snow on the lake will be there for awhile, but that did not stop hundreds of people from walking the lakes, with most of the runners in shorts. The day was mostly sunny today as well, except for the 45 minutes I chose to make my circumnavigation. Only 1 month to the buoy drawing. I've had emails from some of our rather flung readers that they wanted some more pictures of the lake in the snow, seeing that it is summer where they now live. I'm no Ansel Adams, but you get the idea. Each image was uploaded in full size, so clicking on them will expand them to full size. That's true for the site in general.

A great day, even the painters were out.  This gentleman has painted from this spot for years. His oils of the Lake Harriet bandshell are amazing. He sells them off his easel, and in some the the local Linden Hills shops. I had to wait for several people that were watching him paint clear out so I could get a solitary shot. And below, from the south side of the lake, with the Minneapolis skyline in the distance, slightly obscured by the day's haze. Spring is coming, you smell it in the air. How are your boat projects coming??

    180 degrees of our vista is the Sth Pacific ocean.Living at the beach we enjoy seasons of endless surf,swim,sailing& playing in the rhythm of tides & nature.This summer a wild cheeky dolphin showed up & stayed around for months to allow people to join him everyday in his world & to touch this universal dream of swimming with a dolphin!

    Your photos are beautiful.Amazing!!!And thank you for the descriptive stories Clay,your whole sight is of huge interest.I like how the lake is enjoyed & enables so much activity & fun.You
    guys may well have some upcoming Russell Coutts right there!
    And all that snow~ now I can tell you that is another world,I'm sure you could borrow Peter Jackson to film an oscar winning movie with all that beauty.

The Minnesota DNR publishes a bottom contour map of Lake Harriet. Although not really intended for ship navigation, it shows good anchorage locations and is handy to have on-board. It also shows that unlike Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet is uniformly deep, and that means that is is mostly free of the nasty Milfoil that plagues its sister lake. Motors - Electric only!

One of the biggest challenges faced by cruisers on Lake Harriet is the prohibition of Outboards. Because gas motors are NOT allowed by the city, you have to use an electric trolling motor. In almost any sense this is a compromise, as a typical 50-lb thrust motor generates the equivalent of about 0.75HP. For anyone used to having their boat pushed around with a 8HP motor, this can be daunting. In practice, however, it is rare when it becomes a problem on Lake Harriet, as we all go back to mooring buoys, which we can sail to. The size of the lake allows getting to the lee side in a strong blow. The biggest challenge is power management. The motor will be the biggest draw on your boat's 12V system, and a dead battery means either no way to get home, or no lights for the evening sail. Keeping an eye on swimmers

Maybe it's just me, but it seems there are a LOT more people free-swimming across the lakes. I'm sure it is people training for the triathlons, and I didn't give it much thought until last night, when we almost ran over one. We were reaching at about 5 knots, sitting on the low side to induce some heel when we quickly slipped by a swimmer. We didn't see him, and he didn't hear us. I don't know who was more surprised, but I DO know who was in more danger. There was over 20 boats on the lake last evening. Under these conditions, swimming in the open water is just dangerous. I knew the MPRB was thinking about setting up open swim areas, but was pretty sure they had not done so. I called them, and they confirmed that open swimming was illegal, and pointed me to THIS page on their site. In addition, that told me I should call 911 to report swimmers. I'm not sure that I'll do that, but I would really hate to hit one, or even come close. I don't know ...
