Sailing Review: May 15-16
After a Friday with perfect winds, Saturday shows up with clear sky's and no wind at all, Not great sailing weather, but pretty good weather for a grilling on the boat, or raising the mast and launching if you were not yet in the water. Amanda and I planned to meet some friends, so we motored down to the dock, and fired up the grill. Had a nice time talking boats with people on the dock, and the chicken breast sandwiches were great.
A couple of smaller boats ventured out in the fluky winds; this is one day I was happy I had the trolling motor. I almost NEVER use it, but on this day it got a workout.
The scows fared a little better; their big sails and light weight allows them to move in a zephyr.
It was a great day for boat launching, and several showed up while we were having dinner and talking to friends. Here another scow comes in:
Best of all, Scott showed up with his S2-23! His boat also suffered in the vandal attack of last year. Looking good again now!
Sunday was a peach, temps in the 70-s and a 10-15 MPH breeze out of the SE. We headed to the lake, but first the kids wanted to have lunch at the Tin Fish. First stop, Lake Calhoun! While we waited in line, Mark entertained the omnipresent line with his behind the back skills on the ring game.
We headed back to Harriet, but a combination of the kids food coma and Zack having afternoon plans meant that we just putzed on the boat for an hour or so.
The highlight of the weekend for me was that Sheree came out and sailed! We had a snack in the cockpit before heading out, and then raced up and down the lake, several times coming back across with the spinnaker flying. What a day.
Many other boats out to as well, including John's sweet Capri 22, sailing smartly under just her main. We never got close enough for great pictures, but here's one anyway:
After Sheree and I were done sailing, I went back to Lake Calhoun to see Werner and Brian, and we went for an amazing little sail and were serenaded by one passengers who happened to have an amazing singing voice. All of this while the sun set on a amazing sailing weekend.
