More on Milfoil

Lots of new info on the fight against the milfoil. First, the MPRB has created a document that shows the areas of the lakes that experience milfoil growth, and also the areas that will be cut back. They make for an interesting read.

First, and maybe not a big surprise, the Littoral Zone (potential milfoil growth area) on Lake Calhoun is MUCH larger than Lake Harriet's,  131 vs. 88 acres. Also of interest is the areas that will not be cut, and also the areas that per the DNR cannot be cut. You can click on the maps to see them larger.

There will no cutting on Lake of the Isles; mainly do to the lack of a ramp to unload the milfoil.

I found that the cutter typically cuts down to 5 feet, but can cut less if needed.

The machine takes a 1/2 a day to move from lake to lake, so typically stays on a lake for a week or more.

The operator tries to go between the buoys, but it take the right kind of gentle steady wind to hold the boats in a more or less fixed position to make this possible.

A map of Lake Calhoun., and copy of the actual document is after the break

And the original PDF document is HERE
