Season Ends - See you in the Spring!


The sailing season officially ended yesterday, October 12th, on Lake Harriet. To make sure we did not miss the message, Mother Nature provided 2-3 inches of snow to remind us that winter is on the way. A group Lake Harriet cruisers arranged to pull the boats out together, and then we headed off to Salut at 50th & France for a drink, dinner, and a great chat about the sailing season! I'll being doing regular posts on interesting topics over the off-season, so be sure to sign-up for the mailing list! It has been a great (and bitter-sweet) year. DNR map of Lake Harriet

The Minnesota DNR publishes a bottom contour map of Lake Harriet. Although not really intended for ship navigation, it shows good anchorage locations and is handy to have on-board. It also shows that unlike Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet is uniformly deep, and that means that is is mostly free of the nasty Milfoil that plagues its sister lake. Milfoil, and maps of where to expect it

It's a fact of life, both Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun are plagued by Eurasian Milfoil. This non-native water plant was brought to the lakes on the propellers of powerboats. Once it hits a lake, there is little to do except try and control it by mechanical harvesting. It is a slow and costly process. Milfoil grows into a thick clumpy mat, and depending on your keel and rudder configuration, sailing into it can range from a nuisance to a danger. But where might you find it? Well, the key is that the Milfoil seeds need sunlight to sprout, so on Minneapolis lakes, that means less than 10 feet of water. Motors - Electric only!

One of the biggest challenges faced by cruisers on Lake Harriet is the prohibition of Outboards. Because gas motors are NOT allowed by the city, you have to use an electric trolling motor. In almost any sense this is a compromise, as a typical 50-lb thrust motor generates the equivalent of about 0.75HP. For anyone used to having their boat pushed around with a 8HP motor, this can be daunting. In practice, however, it is rare when it becomes a problem on Lake Harriet, as we all go back to mooring buoys, which we can sail to. The size of the lake allows getting to the lee side in a strong blow. The biggest challenge is power management. The motor will be the biggest draw on your boat's 12V system, and a dead battery means either no way to get home, or no lights for the evening sail.
